How to Buy a Mattress

Shopping for a new mattress can be one of the toughest items you've ever had to shop for.  In fact, mattress shopping beats out only tire shopping with 85% of Americans.  However, if you choose your dealer wisely your mattress shopping experience can be very fun and enjoyable.   Our sleep specialists will work with you to find the perfect solution to all of your unique wants, needs, and desires - ensuring that you’ll be happy and comfortable for many years to come.  The major features and benefits that you'll want to understand and decide between will be clearly demonstrated for you to make your decision easy.  In fact, you will be able to see your favorite mattress from the inside out with our cutaway miniature mattress samples.  To help give you a taste of what you'll experience when you visit us, the following are a few things that you will want to consider when purchasing a new sleep set.

Correct Support
The chart below shows correct support in reference to spinal alignment.  The mattress should conform to the shape of your body without sacrificing proper spinal alignment.  Since we are all built differently, there not one ideal mattress anyone could recommend that will achieve this for the majority of people.  Support depends on the entire construction of the sleep set, not on any one particular aspect of the set which is why it is important to purchase the entire sleep set; the mattress and matching foundation.

To help understand each aspect of a sleep set in greater detail, let's look at it piece by piece starting from the ground up.

Bed Frames
Your new sleep set will only be as supportive as the bed frame it is placed on.  For example, you will surely feel every toss and turn on mattress built to have minimal partner disturbance if it is placed on a flimsy bed frame.  A good bed frame contains very little if any nuts and bolts to hold it together.  Nuts and bolts loosen over time and can cause your entire sleep set to "sway" when you shift around in bed.  Another aspect of a good bed frame is the thickness of the steel it is built with.  Thin steel can and will bend under pressure.  Lastly, and most importantly, a good bed frame has great legs...yes, great legs.  If the leg looks easy to bend, it is and will.  While a twin or full size mattress and foundation does not need a bed frame with center support, any size larger will.  The best center support systems run from head to toe in the frame to give you continuous support in the center of your sleep set, and are built with six legs.

Foundations - Box Springs
There are three basic foundations that a mattress can be paired with.  There are wood foundations, steel semi-flex foundations, and traditional box springs.  There is not one that is better than the other, except for certain types of mattresses.  For example, a mattress built only out of foam should be paired with a wooden foundation.  The reason for this is that wood foundations have flat hard surfaces for the foam to rest on.  Steel semi-flex foundations have a metal grid the mattress would have to rest on which could dig into the mattress and cause damage.  The same would happen if the foam mattress were placed on metal springs.

Innerspring mattresses generally last longer when paired with steel semi-flex foundations versus wood.  You'll notice that a mattress's warranty is longer when this is the case versus when innerspring mattresses are paired with wood foundations.

Depending on the construction of the mattress and how the overall pairing supports one's body, a traditional box spring is the ideal choice if you are looking for a low pressure sleep set.  Box springs act like a "shock-absorber" in the sleep set, and can absorb up to 50% of the combined weight of the mattress and the people sleeping on the sleep set, allowing the innerspring in the mattress to last longer while reducing pressure on the sleep surface.

Support Core
Your mattress core can be constructed in a variety of ways.  The most traditional core is an innerspring system and alternatives include water, air, and foam.  While each type has its own benefits, it is our belief that innerspring systems have stood the test of time and with recent innovations in designs make them the best support system for the majority of people.  Most of the innersprings in today's biggest and best mattress brands are designed and manufactured by Leggett & Platt, which is based in Carthage, Missouri.  Here are the main types of innerspring systems available:

Bonnell Innerspring System
The Bonnell innerspring system is the most traditional and trusted innerspring in the industry.  It has hour glass shaped coils that are evenly spaced throughout the system, with helical wires that run from side to side holding the coils together.

Offset Innerspring System
The Offset innerspring system at first glance looks much like the Bonnell innerspring system, however they are very different.  The helical wires that hold all of the coils together run from head-to-toe in the mattress, which helps prevent partners rolling together in the center of the mattress as well as reduce the amount of motion transfer between each side of the mattress.  Typically, there are more coils in the center of this innerspring system than at the head and toe for additional lumbar support.

Marshall Innerspring System
The Marshall innerspring system is comprised of coils wrapped in cloth pockets.  Since there are no helical wires holding the coils together, the coils are each able to flex independently of one another allowing for minimal partner disturbance in a mattress and a more conforming sleep surface compared to other innerspring systems.

Edge Protection
Edge support in a mattress is one of the most underrated aspects of mattress design.  A strong, yet comfortable, edge on a mattress maximizes sleep surface.  The majority of the mattresses at Joplimo Mattress feature high density foam encased edges, the most premium edge protection in the industry.

Foam Encasement
Foam Encasement is the best edge protection in the industry because it maximizes sleep surface.  The high density foam provides a durable, yet comfortable edge.

Comfort Layers
The comfort layers are the foams and fibers that rest upon the support system in your mattress.  Fiber is used mainly to help wick away moisture and maximize air flow in a mattress, while the foam is the main ingredient that ultimately determines the comfort of a mattress.  It is actually a combination of the type of foams, the thicknesses of those foams, the order in which they are layered, and the tightness of how they are sewn in that determines the comfort of a mattress.  The three most common types of foams that are used in a mattress are polyurethane, visco memory foam, and latex foam.  The hardness or softness of foam depends on density and Indentation Load Deflection (ILD - which is the measurement of how much a foam pushes back against an object), which are directly related to one another.  Typically, the greater the density, the greater the ILD of the foam.

Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is the most widely used foam in the industry.  It comes is a wide variety of densities, however the most common densities range from 1.0lb. to 1.8lb..  A mattress built with a large amount of polyurethane foam should be built with higher density polyurethane foam so that body impressions do not form quickly over time.

Visco Memory Foam

Visco memory foam is a polyurethane based foam that was created by NASA as an effort to minimize the pressure astronauts feel in their seats when launching into space.  The pressure relieving qualities of visco memory foam has made it an ideal foam to use in mattresses.  Also, it remembers its original shape and returns to it after being compressed, making it a very durable foam and more resistant to body impressions than low density polyurethane foam.  A big disadvantage of memory foam is that it is not breathable, which can lead to a sleep surface that doesn't regulate temperature very well.  There have, however, been some recent innovations in the product that remedied this issue.

Latex Foam

Latex foam has been used in mattresses for over 60 years.  It is a natural product that is four times more breathable, three times more durable, and 33% more pressure relieving than polyurethane based foams.  It is made by two different processes, Dunlop and Talalay.  The Talalay process is more intensive than the Dunlop process and creates a more consistent and better performing latex foam product.

Cover
The comfort layers within your mattress can only be as comfortable they can if the cover that rests upon them is conforming itself.  Covers, also known as ticking, are made from a wide variety of materials.  The most common covers are made from polyester or cotton or a mixture of each.  A cover consisting of mainly polyester will be the least conforming cover, while the most conforming cover is one that is made with 100% cotton.  Cotton is also much more breathable than polyester and will keep the temperature of your sleep surface regulated.

Quilt Pattern
The quilt pattern will be, in conjunction with the tape edge style, the final determining factor in the hardness or softness of a mattress.  The tighter the quilt pattern, the harder the mattress will be.  The looser the pattern, the softer the mattress will be.  Typically, loose stitch patterns go hand in hand with plush or pillowtop mattresses and tight stitch patterns go with firm mattresses.

Tight Stitch Pattern
A tight stitch pattern will compress all of the comfort layers within a mattress, which will in turn create a harder feeling mattress.

Tack and Jump
A tack and jump stitch pattern will allow all of the comfort layers within a mattress to be held more loosely than a tight stitch pattern, creating a softer sleep surface.

Tape Edge Style
The tape edge style can be regular, eurotop, pillowtop, or box pillowtop.  A regular style tape edge is good for mattresses that do not have a lot of comfort layers.  The eurotop style is essentially the same as a regular tape edge style, so do not pay more money for the decorative additional tape edge that wraps the perimeter of the mattress as it serves no purpose.  Once the amount of comfort layers become too thick, a regular tape edge style is not ideal as it will create a rounded edge on your mattress.  A rounded edge will limit the amount of sleep surface on a mattress because sleeping near the edge will make you feel like you are rolling off of your mattress.  Mattresses with a large amount of comfort layers should be made with a pillow top  so that it can help hold all of the extra comfort layers loosely while providing a square edge.  If the amount of comfort layers is too thick for a traditional pillowtop, a box pillowtop is needed to keep the comfort layers loose and the edge square.

Sleep Accessories
Pillows, sheets, and mattress protectors are just as important as the mattress itself!  The right pillow can ensure proper spinal alignment from head to toe, while sheets work just as mattress covers as described above in allowing all of the comfort layers to conform to you body.  Mattress protectors will ensure a clean sleep surface, as well as protect your mattress from wearing prematurely due to the acids that comprise body moisture.

What is the best mattress?
You can get as technical as you want, but the right mattress is the mattress that is the most comfortable mattress to you that gives you proper spinal alignment as highlighted at the top of this page that also fits any specific wants, needs, and desires that you have.  If you have any further questions, we are happy to help!
